Today’s safety tip is one that kind of touches home for me and is one that if I followed would not of left me with a pile of debt totaling $45,000 and I would still have my business that I had running at the time of the injury.“Protecting yourself at all costs” should be and has to be the first thing you think of before you start any home renovation. It is the simple things that will take you down in most cases so by training yourself to act sooner then later would be a good thing unlike my example below.
Back in 2002 while I was working on a job site I had to use a utility knife to trim some plastic off of a laundry tub. While I was pulling the knife towards me the blade broke and I cut right through my thumb and severed the nerves leaving me with no feeling in my left thumb at all plus I had some nasty scare tissue which would hurt whenever there was pressure put on it from grabbing something. A year after the injury first happened I decided to try and fix the nerve damage as it was causing problems for me working in the cold and also it didn’t allow me to grip things tightly, it was all down hill from there.I ended up having 2 surgeries on my thumb which resulted in a lot of scare tissue build up. My hand then took almost 3 years for me to use fully again. I had to go off of the tools and into an office so I could pay my bills and feed my kids. It truly was the hardest thing I ever had to go through with my professional career and is something that I would never want anyone to have to go through especially when it was an accident that could of very easily been avoided if I would of protected myself better before I started working that day.
How to avoid hand injuries!
The funny thing is there was one simple thing I could of done which would of helped me out a lot. If I would of had leather hand gloves on, the knife would not of cut me so deep or not at all. The leather would of caused a large enough restriction to have stopped the blade some what. Looking back on it now it was such a small thing I should of done and my life now would of been completely different as a result.
