Plan it, think about it and then plan it some more!

by Collin De Ruyck on April 3rd, 2008

The beginning stages of any home project are often over looked which result in your money going right out the door. What you normally end up with is an over ambitious guy who is graving the sounds of hammers banging, saws cutting and the fresh smell of drywall mud who screws everything up and leaves you with a huge mess. I am sorry guys, but it is true. I know this as I use to be one of those guys, but not anymore!

I know you have heard this a thousand times before so consider this your lucky day because your going to hear about it again. If you do not take the time to plan out any project you want to do your not going to be happy with the end results. You have to plan it out before you do it and the best way to plan anything is to put it on paper so you can see it. Planning out something in your head is not going to work guys “We Forget” way to fast. If you don’t plan it our properly you will end up with a project that is going to be over budget and not done the way you wanted it to go. Corners are going to be cut and some products will be used that you didn’t want to use but because you didn’t plan things out properly and didn’t allow for the little things or the unforeseen things. Older homes have a habit of sneaking up behind you and saying “now do this too”.

The hardest thing to do when you consider yourself handy is to ask for help, but let me tell you, the day I called in an interior designer into my home to help me during the planning stages of my own renovations was the day my house turned into a home and the WOW factor appeared with my finished results. Interior designers, even though they can charge a lot of money for consulting, see things that you can’t see during the planning stages which will save you a lot of time and money down the road. They also know what goes with what and how to save money on certain items to give you more money for the things your going to be looking at for years to come. (The finished product)

There are many ways to plan projects so that everything goes smoothly and our “Design” category here on Tool Belt Tips is going to be the place where we talk about it and share idea’s and tips to help everyone try and have a stress free renovation at home.
