Where do you start?

by Collin De Ruyck on April 4th, 2008

Knowing where to start your home renovations can some times be very tricky. We all want our kitchens, bathrooms and our main living rooms to look the nicest as that is where we spend most of our time. But when you are just starting off renovating and you want to learn how to “do it yourself” we don’t want everyone to see our mistakes, and lets face it, when you just start off renovating there is going to be a few mistakes.

Start from the bottom and work your way up!

When I started renovating my home I had the same mind set as most people do. I knew what I wanted to see in my main living area’s but was not sure if I could get the results I wanted so what I did to learn “how to” do it myself is I started working in my basement. The basement of most homes is not normally used as much as the main floor and company hardly ever goes down there when they drop by so this is a very good spot to hide your learning mistakes. One of the nicest things about using your basement to learn how to renovate yourself is there is always some very challenging work to be done that really teaches you tricks of the trades very fast.

Basement ceilings are always way harder to finish then the main floors simple because you have all the duct work exposed under the floor boards and all your plumbing pipes are there as well. This creates a unique situation for you to learn how to frame around objects to build bulkheads as well as it teaches you a lot of proper planning techniques as you are not going to want to have to start everything over after you have got it completed.

Basement floors are also not always level so you learn how to work with materials better just because to have to work that much harder to make everything fit. Getting a shower to look nice in a basement can sometimes be a very hard task as a result of a un level floor but today is your lucky day, I am a master in installing showers professionally into area’s that most would think are impossible locations to get one in, but we will get into that later on in the blog in our Plumbing Tips category.
